UMA: UNLICENSED MOBILE ACCESS
The UMA specifications for Cellular/WLAN convergence represent a significant milestone within the wireless industry. Development of the UMA specifications began in late 2003, with the participating companies sharing a common goal of creating, specifying and promoting a technological solution for extending mobile voice and data services over unlicensed spectrum technologies, including Bluetooth and 802.11.
By deploying UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and unlicensed wireless networks.

UMA technology web site: With the UMA specifications now available, service providers can look to deploy interoperable solutions that enable subscribers to roam and handover seamlessly between cellular networks and public and private WLANs using dual-mode mobile handsets. With UMA technology, subscribers receive a consistent set of mobile voice and data services as they transition between access networks. Solutions based on the UMA specifications support the handover of active mobile voice calls and data sessions between networks, ensuring no interruption of service. - Companies that participated in the development of the Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) specifications include Alcatel, AT&T Wireless Services, Inc., BT PLC, Cingular Wireless LLC, Ericsson AB, Kineto Wireless Inc., Motorola, Inc., Nokia, Nortel Networks, Inc., O2, Rogers Wireless Inc., Siemens AG, Sony Ericsson, and T-Mobile USA.
ASNAP TECHNOLOGY BY CALYPSO WIRELESS
Calypso Wireless has been granted US Patent #6,680,923 titled "Communication system and method". Calypso's technology enables the users devise to automatically detect an available wireless local area network and then seamlessly switch between the signals from a GSM/GPRS link tower to a short range broadband network such as cable or DSL with Wi-Fi. Thus enabling real time video conferencing via phones or any mobile devise powered with Calypso's technology. The patent has given Calypso the rights to offer license agreements to major carriers as well as OEM's.
- Calypso Wireless
Calypso is working hard to facilitate communications, truly a basic human need, by improving wireless connectivity and speed for the benefit of consumers everywhere. - Sleipner SA
Sleipner enables real integration between GSM and WiFi platforms: a fully SIP-compliant softphone that handles GSM calls and WiFi VOIP communication. The result is a solution that can enable a GSM/WiFi device to be a PBX extension in an office and a GSM device both in the office and everywhere. When receiving a GSM call during a VOIP communication, coMob (the software) can switch between the two services.
