MultiMedia - InterMedial

Dick Higgins | Intermedia 1962 - Fluxus artist Dick Higgins describes a branch of American post-modernism from the 1960s that reflects the tumultuous social atmosphere of the era and its impact on the arts. Higgins attention is focused on Intermedia, a myriad of emerging genres that spilled across the boundaries of traditional media. In the interseces between the arts, mixed-media forms coalesced: Happenings, performance art, kinetic sculpture, electronic theater, as well as a variety of deliberately uncategorizable works – such as in Philip Corner's Piano Activities and his own Danger Music #2 from 1962.
Following the example of Marcel Duchamp, Higgins suggests that artists explore the territory that lies between "the general area of art media and those of life media." He calls for unusual combinations of art, including, for instance, the mixing of painting and shoes (as in the art of Claes Oldenburg). With Intermedia, any available object or experience can be incorporated into the artwork.

30 Oct. 2007 considerations: 2 Panasonic D5700's (2x6000=12000 lumens); they are designed to be stackable and have vertical and horizontal lense shift to fine tune alignment. Resolution is only 1024x768, but the projectors are only CHF 6'000 each! There is also a very wide array of lenses available. Also featuring liquid-cooling and dual-lamp system (you can pull the plug from the wall without ever causing any damage). The Panasonic PT-DW10000E is a fantastic beamer with full HD resolution (1920x1080), 10'000 Ansi, Contrast 4'000:1, but it costs CHF 85'000! I am personally impressed by the fantastic quality of the Panasonic Plasma TV TH-103PF9EK, Full HD, Contrast 5'000:1, currently priced at CHF 93'022.=

• Enaction
  Enaction is a term coined in psychology (J. Bruner) and used in a particular biological approach (F. Varela), according to which cognition is fundamentally a feature of living organisms in a dynamic adaptive relationship with their environment. Only recently the term has gained widespread currency in domains such as human-computer interaction. In the same kind of view, the physicist Jean Petitot proposes the idea of a "Phenophysics", based on the theory of "Morphogenesis" of the mathematician R. Thom, according to which the necessary condition for categorization to occur, is the presence of specific singularities in the dynamics of physical sensorial events, on which categorization can get a grip. These theories are used in signal processing, shape recognition and can be used in extraction of emotive patterns in signals. Other related concepts are presently developed also in relationship with artificial intelligence and robotics. The proper domain is that of the so-called embodied cognition, which gives much importance to action and perception in the definition and simulation of intelligent behaviors, by focusing the attention on parallel, distributed architectures, on adaptive behavior of different kinds (not only high order symbolic capacities) and on the possibilities offered by the dynamic systems modeling of behavior.
• Enactive Interfaces are inspired by a fundamental concept of “interaction” that has not been exploited by other approaches to the design of human-computer interface technologies. Mainly, interfaces have been designed to present information via symbols, or icons. In the symbolic approach, information is stored as words, mathematical symbols or other symbolic systems, while in the iconic approach information is stored in the form of visual images, such as diagrams and illustrations. Enactive knowledge is neither symbolic nor iconic. It is direct, in the sense that it is natural and intuitive, based on experience and the perceptual consequences of motor acts. Enactive knowledge is information gained through perception-action interactions with the environment. Examples include information gained by grasping an object, by hefting a stone, or by walking around an obstacle that occludes our view. It is gained through intuitive movements, of which we often are not aware. Enactive knowledge is inherently multimodal, because motor actions alter the stimulation of multiple perceptual systems. Enactive knowledge is essential in tasks such as driving a car, dancing, playing a musical instrument, modelling objects from clay, performing sports, and so on.

Ambient Information Systems

• There is a concern that this proliferation of technology will cause us to become increasingly overwhelmed by information. This scenario moves us away from Weiser's notion of calm technology, which proposes that information should move seamlessly between the periphery and the center of our attention. Mark Weiser stated that good technology should not be experienced as technology at all, and we believe that ambient information systems could support this claim.
• Ambient information systems (which include ambient, peripheral, glance-able, and subtle displays) are non-invasive and provide useful information while blending smoothly into our surroundings. These technologies are meant to be minimally attended and perceivable from outside the range of a person's direct attention, providing pre-attentive processing without being overly distracting. Examples range from large ubiquitous public displays to small bouncing icons on the Macintosh's dock.
• There have been many interesting implementations of ambient information systems (e.g., AmbientDevices’ Stock Orb, Koert van Mensvoort's Datafountain, Philips Electronics' Ambilight, Jafarinami et al.'s Breakaway, Mynatt et al.'s Audio Aura and Digital Family Portrait, and Mankoff et al.'s Daylight Display and BusMobile).
