Multimedia Messaging

Multimedia messaging (MMS), which allows mobile phone users to send text, pictures, sound, and short videos, might overtake the increasingly popular text-only (SMS) service within the next three years.

MMS is built upon a rich and well defined set of standards which offers the potential to go far beyond the simple model of peer to peer photo messaging, the feature with which MMS has inadvertently become identified. Recent studies (Ovum report) have estimated that looking forward, significant portions of MMS traffic will be generated by machine-to-person traffic (M2P).

"By providing an environment which supports media types ranging from text to streaming video, within the framework of IP standards currently in use, MMS can enable truly compelling integrated end-user services". -- David Mantripp
