Mobility

According to Robin Simpson, research director--mobile and wireless at Gartner Group, organizations must ask which section of their workforce can benefit from mobility. It may be as little as 15-20 percent, and within that different roles have different requirements. Gartner identifies five categories:

Message-centric workers, including senior managers.
Knowledge workers who face unstructured, unpredictable tasks and tend to move around and outside the office.
Field workers such as those in logistics, sales, and service require notification and alerts, information about their next jobs, and a simple reply mechanism.
Forms workers, who have very structured tasks involving field data reference or collection.
Power workers, who need the fastest notebooks and the fastest communications to meet their requirements for collaboration and other functions.

Types of information systems

In the upcoming years, companies will move away from message-centric information exchange based upon EDI and adopt process-centric information exchange based upon XML (Real-time, Internet-enabled, XML, Global, talking to all businesses, using Standard industry dictionaries). Information systems are an important contributor to operational efficiency, productivity, morale, customer service, and customer satisfaction. IS is a major source of information for effective decision making.

:. MRP II: Manufacturing Resource Planning
   Plan and monitor all resources of a manufacturing firm (manufacturing, marketing, finance, engineering) and
   simulate the manufacturing system. MRP represents a class of systems, often thought of as predecessors
   of ERP, that focus on planning the material requirements for production. Forecast or actual demand is fed
   to MRP either manually or from other types of systems. MRP functionality is embedded in the offering of
   all leading ERP vendors.

ERP: Enterprise Resource Planning

ERP links financial, manufacturing, human resources, distribution, and order management systems into a tightly integrated single system with shared data and visibility across the business. Benefits could include reduction in working capital, better information on customer wants and needs, and the ability to view and manage the extended enterprise of suppliers, alliances, and customers as an integrated whole. One thing to keep in mind is that usually ERP implementation is more costly by a factor of three to ten than the product itself.
