PHILIPS AND THE ART OF REDUCTION
Philips Design launched the next stage of the Sense And Simplicity campaign, called Next Simplicity, introducing 25 items for home, office and medical use. These products will only be mass produced in three to five years' time.
AIR SENSOR
This device monitors the temperature and air quality outdoors. A smile means it is a lovely day, while a frown means you should stay home :)
AIR TREE
The Air Tree works cleans the air. It releases or extracts water vapour in the air in the humidity mode; and filters smoke and pollutants, as well as refreshes the air by charging it with negative ions, in the clean mode.
HERBARIUM
Place the biodegradable pads - holding soil, seeds and a tag containing, among other things, the plant's cultivation data - into the frame. The Herbarium will read the data and provide the correct amount of water and light. Just sit back and wait for the harvest.
MUSIC EXPLORER
The standalone column includes a speaker base that lets you play music from discs and Internet radio stations, and even shop for music online. There's no need for a separate remote - the detachable screen panel is the remote. Rotating the panel lets you switch between the modes.
SOFT THERAPY
Soft Therapy is a wearable, cordless garment that reduces tension in strained muscles and joints in the shoulder and back by combining infrared heat with vibrations for massage. The arms are to hold the device in place around the neck, while your back gets the treatment.
IN TOUCH
The high-tech alternative to Post-It messages on the fridge. The display screen doubles as a mirror. You use a stylus to write messages on the screen, and they darken with time and fade away eventually. Plus, at the bottom of the mirror is a recording area: Just press to record video messages.
ILLUSION SYSTEM - WAVE
The Wave speaker, designed to be hung above a sofa, bends at both ends to beam sound directly at those seated below. You can even choose the colour of the fabric covering to match your decor.
ILLUSION SYSTEM - MERCURY
To be placed beside a sofa, the Mercury lets you manage your home media while staying in the aforementioned sofa. To remove the disc, simply hold your hand above the slot and the disc ejects as if by magic.
ILLUSION SYSTEM - WAND
The Wand works like a remote control, and switches between TV channels by flicking it forwards or backwards. Waving it horizontally scrolls through the contents of a DVD disc.
MOMENTO
Gaze into a crystal ball of your life. Momento stores moving images, which can be downloaded from a video camera or mobile phone. Shake the globe to switch from one clip to another, and the old images break apart in a falling snowflake animation. Like shaking a snow globe but with your favourite moments inside.
LED SHADES - FLEX
Multiple LEDs are embedded in the shade. Just bend the rubber body of the shade to widen or narrow the beam of light.
CHAMELEON
The Chameleon's lampshade changes to match any colour that you show it. A special double-light feature provides regular illumination through a standard light bulb, while a ring around the bulb produces the changing colours. To turn it off, show it something black.
LED BULBS - CONSTELLATION
Choose from a range of pastel lights by adjusting the "finger" on the side of the bulb. The geometric frame also means that light is projected in fascinating patterns on surrounding surfaces.
