A NEW RANGE OF NOKIA NSERIES PHONES

The Nokia N-series phones are sexy :) But as a converged device for shooting quality pictures, Nokia has a long way to go if it wants to outdo Samsung, which is introducing in the Korean market (CDMA with EV-DO high-speed data) the 7-megapixel SCH-V770 featuring a 3x optical zoom (7.8 to 23.4mm), 5x digital zoom, and the possibility to add a wide-angle converter lens.
The Nokia N90 is a tri-band phone for GSM 900/1800/1900, EDGE and WCDMA networks, will have a 2-megapixel camera and is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2005. The N70 phone will hit the shelves in the third quarter, and the N91 multimedia phone with a 4-gigabyte hard drive for music files is due out by the end of the year.
The latest Nokia Nseries, capitalizes on the convergence of imaging, smartphone features and 3G. 3G-enabled features are two-way video calling, video sharing, video streaming and push email.
"We foresee that already this year, the camera phone market will grow to be over four times the size of the digital camera market" said Juha Putkiranta, Senior Vice President, Multimedia Imaging, Nokia.

DIGITAL BIO DISK
A Korean team has invented a portable test kit that can detect five diseases including liver cancer and diabetes using a few drops of blood. The kit, dubbed Digital Bio Disk, will enable people to check themselves for diseases without visiting a clinic or hospital.
"We have invented Digital Bio Disc so people can easily make a primary diagnosis of cancer and diabetes at home", said Yoo Jae-chun, 40, a professor at the Graduate School for Information Technology of Pohang University of Science and Technology, who led the research. The team has applied for an international patent for the medical kit.
A fast-moving disk-shaped device in the drive can check if elements in the blood match genetic information about the diseases. People can see the result on the screen about 40 minutes after putting in their blood. The diagnosis can be forwarded to a hospital through the Internet, where doctors decide if the patient needs further tests.

VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY UPDATE
The U.S. video game industry has $10 billion in annual revenue, roughly the same as U.S. box office sales. Nearly a quarter of all gamers are over 40.
The interactive unit of Nielsen Entertainment conducted a random survey of 1,500 people in January and February 2005. The research group found 40 percent of U.S. households have some kind of system dedicated to game play, whether a gaming PC, a console or a handheld device. Among gamers, 23 percent own all three types of systems, and 8 percent said they owned all three consoles (PlayStation 2, Xbox and the GameCube). By the way, Microsoft will be showing off the new Xbox in about a month from now, couple of days before the beginning of E3 (May 18).
According to the survey, active gamers tend to spend just over 5 hours a week playing alone and 3 hours a week playing with people or online. Teen-age women tended to play more socially while women 25-54 are roughly split between playing alone and with others. For males, Nielsen said, games now rank only behind DVDs as a purchase category, ahead of CDs, digital MP3 files and other ways of buying music.

TRANSMITTING SENSORY DATA INTO THE HUMAN BRAIN
While brain implants are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the only non-invasive ways of manipulating the brain remain crude. A technique known as transcranial magnetic stimulation can activate nerves by using rapidly changing magnetic fields to induce currents in brain tissue. However, magnetic fields cannot be finely focused on small groups of brain cells, whereas ultrasound could be.
The entertainment giant Sony has been granted a patent on a device for transmitting sensory data directly into the human brain. The device fires pulses of ultrasound at the head to modify firing patterns in targeted parts of the brain, creating "sensory experiences" ranging from moving images to tastes and sounds.
Sony first submitted the patent application for the ultrasound method in 2000, which was granted in March 2003. Since then Sony has filed a series of continuations, most recently in December 2004 (US 2004/267118).

PODCASTS
INTERNET RADIO SHOWS
Podcasts, the home-brewed audio programs, have grown in prominence along with Weblogs, the online diaries that serve as alternative news sources. Podcasters create radio-like programs of commentary, music or humor, which are saved in MP3 audio format and posted online. Listeners are automatically notified when a new podcast is available (generally via RSS).
According to a recent survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, conducted between February and March 2005, twenty-nine percent of U.S. adults who own MP3 players say they have downloaded podcast programs from the Internet. That means more than 6 million people are listening to a form of communication that emerged only last year.
Podcasting differs from broadcasting and webcasting in how content is transmitted; instead of a central audio stream, listeners download audio files automatically.
Podcasting differs from autocasting in content; podcasts are generally voice broadcasts, while autocasting is speech-synthesized versions of text blogs.
