SNOCAP OPENS DIGITAL REGISTRY

The online music service SNOCAP is the latest venture of Napster founder Shawn Fanning. As of today, SNOCAP offers labels, publishers and unsigned artists the ability to deliver their music to consumers in a manner and scale never before possible. Content providers can easily manage all aspects of digital distribution through SNOCAP's database, which enables them to establish business rules and maintain full control of their content across multiple online retail locations.

Independent artists and small record labels can register their songs in the SNOCAP's Public Music Registry and receive payment when they are traded over SNOCAP-enabled retailers, including authorized peer-to-peer networks. At the same time, peer-to-peer networks like Kazaa and LimeWire could use SNOCAP to block unauthorized copies of songs and replace them with protected versions that can be controlled by their owners.

Three out of the four major labels (Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, and EMI Group Plc) have registered their songs with SNOCAP, as have larger independent labels like TVT and Rykodisc. The fourth major label, Warner Music Group Corp, might be in talks with SNOCAP.
