WLAN | MOBILE SERVICES IN SINGAPORE
In Singapore, you can enjoy free wireless broadband access at the Airport, Suntec city and Coffee Bean outlets when you roam with StarHub. Getting UserID and Password is simple: dial *9434. If you roam with SingTel, dial *624 for the wireless surf zones and *186 for WiFi or Dialup Free ID and password.
Both StarHub and SingTel offer a service called "Local Direct Call" or "Local Direct Dial". The service allows 2 foreigners in Singapore to make IDD-free calls to each others when roaming on their networks. Just dial #0(country code)(mobile no).

ONLINE IN SINGAPORE
When I arrived in Singapore, I tried to use a dialup connection to get my e-mails. I had the ID, Password, and phone number. Handshake works, I am online, I can check the e-mails but I can not browse the web!!!
It took me a while to figure out that the Singapore Broadcasting Authority has mandated the use of proxy servers for all dial-up and broadband users. As they say: "Users will only be able to access certain Internet services (web sites) through the proxy servers". In reality, users are only able to access the web through the proxy servers. No proxy, no web.
Here is the http proxy I am currently using: proxy.singnet.com.sg
If you are travelling with kids, SingTel has a great marketing name for the other proxy:
Family Online Service: fol.singnet.com.sg

RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION, INVASION OF PRIVACY?
Since RFID chips are embedded in the products you buy, and they are not turned off when you leave the shop with the merchandise, their actual use will go beyond inventory control; it might reach the much-dreaded sphere of privacy invasion.
Whenever you enter a store, computers in the store can be dedicated to receiving the radio waves of the RFID chips on the e.g. clothes you are wearing. This means that store owners can access, in a matter of seconds, information on products that you have on you (say, you are wearing specifically Armani's Jeans and have a box of Viagra in your pocket :).

NINTENDO DS: DUAL-SCREENED PORTABLE GAME SYSTEM
Nintendo will unveil a new mobile-sized game console, codenamed "Nintendo DS", equipped with two separate 3-inch TFT LCD display panels, separate processors, and semiconductor memory of up to 1 Gigabit. It's scheduled to launch worldwide before the end of 2004.
What is the meaning of having two liquid crystal display?
In a soccer game, users can view the whole game on one screen while simultaneously focusing on an individual soccer player's tackle or goal on the other screen.Players will no longer be forced to interrupt game play to shift perspective, such as moving from a wide shot to a close up, or alternating between a character's ongoing battle and a map of the environment.
Does Nintendo DS compete with Sony's PSP?
Sony's PSP is meant to become the "walkman for the 21st century", it will play games, music and movies.
Nintendo's DS focuses on enabling a superior gaming experience. Nintendo believes that video games should be fun and simple, like toys.

SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH MY AVATAR
Like flying cars and paperless offices, we were supposed to have virtual selves in cyberspace by now, and avatar technology exists since the 80's, so why didn't the Lawnmower Man happen? The answer may lie in our own discomfort at showing each other what we think of ourselves, like writing our own CV is more difficult than writing the CV of a friend. Where avatars are beginning to live and work are in on-line gaming. There my character is mostly designed by the game itself and I can only personalize it, like a dressed up Barbie or Ken doll. Another example is in on-line communities like Habbo (www.habbo.com), where the cartoon-like depiction of myself, and the miniature 3D perspective, allow me to keep a distance from my avatar, and therefore keeps me from exposing my self image to the world. These are more like dressed up Playmobil characters.
It is said that men prefer communicating shoulder to shoulder rather than face to face, distracted by the task at hand they feel more comfortable expressing themselves; beer in hand watching the game, fishing, building a treehouse or raising a barn, whatever. The on-line gaming avatars are currently interacting in this way, a group of players from around the world gathered in cyberspace to slay a dragon and, on the side, exchange views. I predict this trend will continue and avatars will arrive but when they do they won't be in your face, but rather by your side, and the best avatars will be made by your friends.

A NEW TREND IN MUSIC PROMOTION
Sony Music has just announced that they have signed a music promotion deal with EA.
The interesting aspect is that the collaboration between the giant of video games and the big recording label is setting the stage for three new trends:
Pre-Releases of Songs via game releases.
For instance, the EA game "NFL Street" will contain a number of pre-release songs by famous Sony artists.
Game-Themed Music Videos.
This new species of music videos will feature gameplay footage combined with songs (singles for radio) extracted from the game soundtrack.
A Bonus Disc containing a Game Demo when purchasing new music releases.
