ONLINE IN SINGAPORE
When I arrived in Singapore, I tried to use a dialup connection to get my e-mails. I had the ID, Password, and phone number. Handshake works, I am online, I can check the e-mails but I can not browse the web!!!
It took me a while to figure out that the Singapore Broadcasting Authority has mandated the use of proxy servers for all dial-up and broadband users. As they say: "Users will only be able to access certain Internet services (web sites) through the proxy servers". In reality, users are only able to access the web through the proxy servers. No proxy, no web.
Here is the http proxy I am currently using: proxy.singnet.com.sg
If you are travelling with kids, SingTel has a great marketing name for the other proxy:
Family Online Service: fol.singnet.com.sg
