INTERNET-BASED TELEVISION

Telecoms operators across the world see selling television as a way to boost the take-up of fast Internet connections such as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL).

Through compression technology it is now possible to offer standard broadcast quality television over an Internet connection of 1 Megabit per second (Mbs). High definition TV can be offered if a consumer has a broadband Web connection that allows four to five Mbs.

The Platform Players:
Microsoft TV | News Corp-owned NDS | OpenTV | Liberate Technologies

The Set-top Box Makers:
Pace Micro Technology (UK) | Thomson (FR) | Intel (USA)

UK: SMS FLAT - MOBILE INTERNET USAGE UP STRONGLY

August 2003 :: British mobile phone users downloaded an average 28.5 million Internet pages per day to their phones; more than three times the level of one year ago, according to data released by the mobile data association (MDA)

MDA expects WAP page impressions to reach eight billion for 2003, with 5.5 billion so far in the year through August. The most popular pages include celebrity gossip, film and gig sites, as well as established news and sports sites

The market for downloadable ringtones will grow again as newer phones are capable of playing "polyphonic" tunes

The number of text messages remained stuck around the 55 million mark for the seventh month in a row, after years of solid growth
