COOL IDEAS

fastmobile
fastmobile services combine instant messaging elements, regular SMS texting, MMS elements, email and they allow people to communicate using a walkie-talkie function over GPRS or 3G.

Simpay
Four of Europe's biggest wireless operators - Vodafone Group PLC, Orange SA, T-Mobile International AG and Telefonica Moviles SA - are moving ahead with a venture designed to make it easier for consumers to pay for items via their mobile phones. The venture, called Simpay, will deal with the routing, clearing and settling of mobile payments over a single platform.

TURN A PDA INTO A HANDHELD TERMINAL: SPROQIT

The Sproqit approach reminds me of terminal computing (and the Microsoft, Intel idea of network PCs).
Sproqit software on a PDA with internet access, gives the users access to their home PCs. Graphics are displayed on their PDAs, but people are actually using Outlook on their desktop PCs.

WLAN ACCES VIA SIM-CARD AUTHENTICATION: ERICSSON VIEW

WLAN access with a SIM-card as authentication will be commercially available toward the end of the year. Last year there were 24,000 WLAN hot spots around the world and that the number could grow to 100,000 in 2006. Due to the WLAN's limited range, it cannot replace 3G, as it would take 10,000 WLAN base stations to cover the same area as one 3G base station. But Wi-Fi can complement 3G, especially since the price of WLAN chipsets has come down to $12 and network access will soon be simplified through the use of a phone SIM card.

1 MILLION GAME BOY ADVANCE SP HAVE BEEN SOLD!

Game Boy Advance SP ($99), has sold more than 1.1 million units since its late-March launch. Until today, the Game Boy has easily beaten back all competitors since the line was introduced in 1989.

Nintendo will contend its monopoly with two new entrants into the market later this year, a Palm OS-based device from a new company called Tapwave and the Nokia n-gage (cell phone/game deck combination from Nokia).

Nintendo will also have to contend in 2004 with the PSP, the first portable gaming device from Sony Corp, which overtook Nintendo in the market for game consoles in the mid-1990s with the launch of its first PlayStation.

iTUNES MUSIC STORE UPDATE: Apr. 28 2003 - May 28 2003

Today, the download pace has slowed to about 100,000 tracks a day.
Fact is that after 1 month of operations, 3 million songs have been sold!
This is an impressive result considering the following:
:: US only market = 250 million
:: 80% have a PC = 200 million
:: 1% Mac on OsX = 2 million target segment (more than 1 song per potential user)
