THE MUSIC INDUSTRY SAGA CONTINUES... WITH PURETUNES!
Today, a new music download service was launched in Madrid, and it is called PureTunes.
Unlike other download services such as Kazaa, PureTunes manages a music library and says it will pay royalties to performers. If you signup with PureTunes you get 25 downloads for free... eight hours of downloads cost $3.99 while unlimited downloads for a month cost $24.99. The Puretunes software is very easy to use and intuitive, but the choice of available music is somewhat limited.
PureTunes follows Weblisten.com (launched in 1999), selling music downloads without the labels' approval by taking advantage of Spain's copyright regime.
The funny thing is that PureTunes has just signed Grokster, the free file-swapping network that won a recent U.S. legal decision against the music labels, as a marketing partner. Grokster will get a cut of sales leads it brings to PureTunes.
