YAHOO PLATINUM: SUBSCRIPTION VIDEO SERVICE FROM YAHOO
Internet media company Yahoo Inc. launched a long-expected subscription video service that features news, sports and entertainment. This service, called Yahoo Platinum, is expected to be the main competitor to RealNetworks Inc.'s SuperPass service, which has garnered nearly 1 million subscribers to its mix of news, entertainment and sports.
"We'll have exclusive video that's not available on television," David Mandelbrot, vice president for media and entertainment at Yahoo, told Reuters last week. The price for this premium service will be of $9.95 per month and the list of partners include networks like ABC, CBS and Fox.
This strategic change towards premium services began in May 2001, when former Hollywood studio executive Terry Semel became Yahoo's chief executive.
