WHERE IS THE BUSINESS CASE FOR WIRELESS HIGH BANDWIDTH SOLUTIONS?
In the most advanced wireless communications countries Japan and South Korea, which launched fast mobile data services last year, data traffic makes up less than 25 percent of total revenues, and average revenue per user is flat.
In Europe, most operators still focus on simple data services, such as picture messaging and e-mail, which work well on current second generation networks. The scary thing, considering that European operators have spent in total 100 billion Euros for third generation (3G), is that consumers are currently using the heavily subsidized picture phones as portable photo albums instead of devices for sending photos.
It will be interesting to see how Hutchison 3G, the upstart high-speed wireless operator that is expected to start commercial operations of Europe's first third generation mobile network next month, will perform.
