J-PHONE HAS STARTED OFFERING COMMERCIAL 3G SERVICES IN JAPAN

:: Mobile phones with color screens were introduced first in Japan.
:: Wireless Internet was introduced first in Japan.
:: 3G is being introduced first in Japan.
:: Unfortunately Tokyo's Nikkei average is trading near 19-year lows

Today, Japan's J-Phone Corp. became the first Vodafone Group Plc unit to start a commercial third-generation (3G) mobile phone service, J-Phone aims to sign up one million 3G users by March 2004.

NTT DoCoMo Inc has won only 149,000 users in its 14 months of 3G operation.

The wireless industry is betting that advanced 3G services, such as transmission of video clips and quick Internet access, will offset declining revenue from voice communications.

PANASONIC GD87 / GD88

The Panasonic GD87 / GD 88 is a stylish, compact, light and appealing phone. Has got a built-in camera and a superb 65,536 colors screen.

By looking at the picture on your left, you'll notice the remarkable difference in resolution and color depth offered by the screen of the beautiful Panasonic GD 87 compared to the one of the Sony Ericsson T300.

If we would compare the Panasonic GD87 to the Orange SPV I have to say that Panasonic has a better GUI for operating a multimedia phone.

NEW J2ME MIDP 2.0 TO KEEP THE PROMISE?

Allies of Sun Microsystems have completed a second version of Java software for cell phones that they hope will fill some of the gaps left by the first, but many expect challenges moving to the new technology.
Announced earlier this month, the new Java holds the promise of simpler cell phone programming, richer games, more money for cell phone service providers and software that connects to Internet services.
But some experts predict that memory requirements and cost will likely hamper adoption of the software, known as Mobile Information Device Platform (MIDP) 2.0.

DoCoMo drops Microsoft's video format for it's 3G cell network.

NTT DoCoMo is switching from a Microsoft video format to an open industry standard for its video-on-demand service offered over its third-generation cellular network. The company is dropping the use of ASF (Advanced Streaming Format) on its I-motion service in favour of MP4, a wrapper format for MPEG4 video and audio and text, because of the cost of licensing fees levied for use of the system by Microsoft, according to an NTT DoCoMo spokeswoman.

ORANGE SPV :: SONY ERICSSON T300 :: DATA ROAMING

The Orange SPV is a great device,
the Sony Ericsson T300 is a good phone.

As expected, it takes some time before you get used to operate the sophisticated SPV phone... simple tasks like sending images via the infrared port become very complicated unless you are an experienced Pocket PC user. On the other hand, I have to admit that if you have a notebook and you synch all your MS Outlook data with the SPV phone you definitely have a great companion. The other great thing is the 8 MB SD memory card that comes with the phone, so that you can really carry with you good games, good music and short videos that you can watch using media player... even web surfing is a pleasant experience on the SPV phone.

Since most people use the phone for making phone calls or dropping SMS messages, I have to say that the a simpler device like the T300 would do the job. What I like about the Sony Ericsson T68i or the T300 is accessing my e-mails (pop3 and imap are supported) over GPRS when travelling. What I don't like about the T300 is the lack of a proper Calendar!

2 hours ago, I was at the Milan airport, and I've noticed big billboards promoting 3 3G services... and my feeling is.... do these guys ever take the airplane? Today, we are in the infancy of Data Roaming. Most of the times I travel to other countries I loose the GPRS service which also means no MMS. I fly to Toronto and suddenly I loose the GPRS service... but the people who live there have got GPRS!!! Even in the Netherlands, I couldn't get data services...

CHRISTMAS 2002 WHISH:
I really hope that this Christmas, major Telecom will spend some time in crystallizing international data roaming contracts to make the mobile phone the preferred device for checking e-mails when travelling (GPRS or better is a requirement).

T-MOBILE WITHDRAWS NOKIA 7210

"T-Mobile has withdrawn Nokia's 7210 from sale just days after beginning sales of the much anticipated picture-messaging handset.
In a fax sent by T-Mobile to dealers the mobile operator explains it is withdrawing the 7210 from sale because of "continued instability of the handset" and customer complaints. Early customers report a number of problems, detailed in T-Mobile fax, including:

:: Radio interface freeze when the handset appears to be functioning normally but cannot make or receive calls (most commonly happens when GPRS is activated)
:: Intermittent software crashes
:: High level of picture messaging delivery failures

The reported problems with the phone are similar to those cited by mm02 last month when it pulled the release of the 7210."

GRAN TURISMO: 100 HOURS OF FUN AND SUBLIMINAL ADVERTISING

Sony Computer Entertainment has sold about 30 million Gran Turismo games since it launched the first version in 1997, mostly in the United States and Europe. Both regions have twice as many users as Japan.

"We always knew the game would have a profound effect on the player," said Kazunori Yamauchi, producer of the Gran Turismo series, noting it takes the average player about 100 hours to master the game. And it's not just 100 hours of subliminal advertising -- they're intense, interactive hours of getting to know the car."
Yamauchi, who heads Polyphony Digital Inc, a unit of Sony Computer Entertainment, said he gets asked all the time by carmakers to feature their machines in the game but never considered charging for advertising.

"We do not want to be tied to the requests you might get from paying advertisers." Full article

3G IN JAPAN

.: DoCoMo offers 3G services based on W-CDMA technology, the same format as J-Phone.

.: KDDI Corp, Japan's second-largest telecoms firm that offers 3G services based on a competing CDMA2000 format, had over three million users at the end of October 2002.

.: J-Phone, owned by Japan Telecom Holdings Co Ltd. and its parent Vodafone, will soon launch 3G services in Japan. J-Phone President Darryl Green has said the company planned to offer dual mode handsets that work both on the 3G network and the GSM (global system for mobile communication) network, which is widely used in Europe. That would enable subscribers to enjoy advanced 3G services when they are in Japan and use the same handset as a GSM phone in Europe, where commercial 3G services have yet to start. Dual-mode handsets make sense for Vodafone since European carriers in its group will need them to enable users to make calls both in cities and rural areas, where the 3G network may take time to arrive. Sanyo Electric Co Ltd. and NEC Corp, provided J-Phone with the 3G handsets during the 3G test service.
