Today, Japan's J-Phone Corp. became the first Vodafone Group Plc unit to start a commercial third-generation (3G) mobile phone service, J-Phone aims to sign up one million 3G users by March 2004.
NTT DoCoMo Inc has won only 149,000 users in its 14 months of 3G operation.
The wireless industry is betting that advanced 3G services, such as transmission of video clips and quick Internet access, will offset declining revenue from voice communications.
